Not the big man, bruiser real-life Barry Seal, this is a cleaned up, trimmed down Hollywood style Barry Seal with Tom Cruise, shades on and the all too recognisable grin relishing the Top Gun style adrenalin rush of the pilot's seat.

In 1978 TWA commercial pilot Barry Seal and family man with a trophy wife (Sarah Wright) and two kids, bored and in need of a buzz takes up CIA man-in-the-background, Monty Schafer's (Domhnall Gleeson) offer to fly over Central America photographing communist insurgents - 'We're building nations down there.' Seal's in for the ride and it's not long before he's doing a sideline in the cocaine run into the US for Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel. There's more to come He's Schafer's asset and it's go for broke running AK47's for the CIA to the Contras in Nicaragua. Factor in Ronald Regan, whom Seal admired, Oliver North, General Noriega and the Iran-Contra scandal and this is the dirty war from that era. And one problem remained for Barry Seal. What do you do with suitcase loads of cash? 'American Made' is a Hollywood star turn entertainment platform with touches of humour that stops short of delving into the behind the scenes reality.
