When a group of best friends in Tel Aviv gather to watch Universong, they are less than impressed by the official Israeli entry. They can do better,so they create and record their own song on a mobile phone. Little do they know that it will go viral !
A surprise is in store, it's seen by the Universong judges and becomes Israel’s next official entry.
Anat (Anat Waxman), a baker whose husband had gone off to Thailand, Yael (Yael Bar-Zohar), ex-beauty queen and now a lawyer worried about publicity, Dana (Dana Ivgy), PA to an OTT female politician, shy blogger Keren (Keren Berger) and Ofer (Ofer Shecter), the only man, an uninhibited gay primary school teacher who serenades the kids in drag are propelled on a crazy journey to international stardom and a head to head with the Russian entry in the Universong final.
It's a far cry from Eytan Fox's previous films - 'Yosser & Jagger' (2002), 'Walk on Water' (2004)and 'Yossi' (2012) addressing issues such as the Holocaust and the Arab-Israeli conflict and lost love. 'Cupcakes' is a feel-good entertaining candy coloured musical in the 50s MGM Hollywood tradition with touches of Pedro Almodovar.
It's heart warming and nostalgic movie longing for the innocence of the past but is a bit cringe worthy at times and the acting and script could have more vibrance. Perhaps a few more 'in your face' Abba style numbers would have given it that added lift?
