Paul Shrader's anarchic, audacious, nastier the better, in-your-face ultra-violent 'Dog Eat Dog' throws PC out of the window.

Adapted from ex-con Ed Bunker's cult novel, 'Dog Eat Dog' is a crazy off-your-head, garish, plot muddled, tacky, hell, there's no rules, top-shelf, comic strip mess.

Violence and death's all part of the game. Mad Dog, played with relish by Willem Dafoe, opens the proceedings with a coke addled flip into butchery, itchy trigger finger mode when an ex-girlfriend wants him out. Troy's (Nicolas cage) breathing fresh air after a long stretch and dreams of Hawaii. Diesel's (Christopher Matthew Cook) along for the ride when the three psychotic ex-cons are hired to kidnap a mobster's baby. Failure and ultra-violence is the game, bathed in a garish cinematic colour scheme.

It's a tangled mess, but Hollywood's maverick director, who does a crime boss cameo makes his mark.
