The Hollywood legend and Academy Award winning star Gloria Graham (Annette Bening) treading the boards in a provincial theatre's production of 'The Glass menagerie' was quite an audience 'wow' in the early 1981. A declining career, memories of past glories and an unexpected visit to a past love affair would tell an extraordinary story of a legendary femme fatale and her young lover.
When Gloria Graham collapses in a Lancaster hotel she contacts her former lover Peter Turner (Jamie Bell) asking to stay with his family in Liverpool. Their affair maybe long past but memories remain.
With superb performances and Matt Greenhaigh's adaptation of Peter Turner's memoir coupled with Paul Guigan's feel for the story shows that that love lives on. Annette Bening excels as the fading Hollywood star whose mother (Vanessa Redgrave) compares her to Marilyn Monroe, Jamie Bell is the perfect cast as her former lover and straight talking Julie Walters and Kenneth Cranham as Peter Turner's parents adds the final touch. With great performances, scenes that reflect an extraordinary relationship at a time before lives were invaded by iPhones, humour, passion and some great one-liners, 'Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool' is a don't miss delight. Love never dies.
