Mamoru Oshii's 1995 masterpiece is a hard act to follow. Scarlett Johansson does her Frankenstein-like role credit as Major, a one-of-a-kind human cyborg hybrid, a brain transplanted into a futuristic high tech shell. This super soldier in counter terrorism Section 9 with her side kick Batou (Pilou Asbaek) of the punk hair is tasked with tracking down Kuze (Michael Carmen Pitt) who's hacked into the Hanka Robotics' artificial intelligence technology and that's a cardinal sin. 'Glitches' along the way will lead Major Mira Killian to the mystery of her past. Stunning visuals and action sequences, the City's a crazy, nightmarish, neon lit hologram carnival and cameo roles come from 'Beat' Takeshi Kitano as Boss man Aramaki and Juliette Binoche as engineer Dr.Ouelet. How die-hard fans will take to this Hollywood action style adaptation remains to be seen.
With nods to 'Total Recall', 'The Matrix', 'Blade Runner' and 'Robocop', Japanese characters are out, westerners are in and Hollywood action replaces the dark, thought provoking elements of the original. A beautifully shot, visually dazzling, computer generated extravaganza that's a ghost in a shell.
