Francis Lee places rural life at the centre of his superb Yorkshire set, romantic drama, feature debut and it works brilliantly. Friends have left the countryside but Johnny Saxby's a gay man alone, living on an isolated farm with his widowed father Martin( Ian Hart) who's had had a stroke and his stern grandmother Deidre (Gemma Jones). Casual sex and booze are centre placed in Johnny's emotionally numb life but when Romanian migrant Gheorghe Inonescu (Alec Secareanu) is taken on as casual labour his life changes. Initial resentment of the 'gypsy' is replaced by respect and admiration for Gheorghe's hard work during lambing and innovative ideas for the farm. When nights are spent away from the farm house repairing dry stone walls, a relationship develops and warmth and tenderness enters Johnny's life - 'I don't want to be a f...-up anymore.'

A stunning debut feature with stand out lead performances, atmospheric cinematography (Joshua James Richards) and a spot on script.
