'Original, sad and funny- a lonely man falling in love with a computer - wonderfully engaging and provocative'.
The gentle and soulful Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is emotionally scarred by his impending divorce after the end of a long relationship and becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive and unique entity in its own right. 'It's a consciousness'. Can it be true? Is this sci-fi ? Enter Samantha, a bright, very female sexy voice (Scarlett Johansson) who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. It is true and as her needs and desires grow, as with his own, it turns into an eventual love for each other.
'Her' is a unique film. It's got a 21st century hippiness that Joaquin Phoenix carries as a gentle slightly off-the-planet character conducting a romance with a sexy voiced artificial intelligence - a fully blown romance that leads Samantha to suggest a surrogate sex ! It's original, sad and funny and who would have thought that a film about a lonely man falling in love with a computer would be so wonderfully engaging and provocative.
Joaquin Phoenix gives a tour-de-force performance and Hoyte van Hoytema's cinematography offers a dream-like quality to the whole scenario - Spike Jonze has scored an original and wonderfully quirky gem. A hit movie.
