'Jersey Boys' is the Clint Eastwood screen version of the 2005 Tony Award-winning musical and tells the compelling story of four young men from New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group 'The Four Seasons' with their instantly recognisably sound and Frankie Valli's falsetto that gave classic juke box rock'n'roll hit after hit - 'Sherry,' 'Big Girls Don’t Cry,' 'Walk Like a Man,' 'Dawn,' 'Rag Doll, 'Bye Bye Baby,' 'Who Loves You'.
Bypassing big Hollywood names, John Lloyd Young brings his Tony Award-winning portrayal of the legendary lead singer Frankie Valli to the screen, Michael Lomenda and Vincent Piazza star respectively as bass player Nick Massi and Frankie's best friend Tommy De Vito, two original members of The Four Seasons, Erich Bergen plays Bob Gaudio keyboard player who wrote or co-wrote all of the group’s classic hits and Christopher Walken is slightly tongue in cheek mobster Gyp De Carlo. The film's from a screenplay and musical book by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice with music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe.
Classic 60s hits in the movie form the background to stories of betrayal, crime, the Mob, the feeling of success and failure and frictions within the group but it skims the surface. It needs that extra depth and punch to lift the film beyond the stage play. Nevertheless there's Frances Castelluccio/ Frankie Valli's voice, the classic hits of the Four Seasons and a sound never to be repeated.
