Michael Winterbottom's visual diary of North London band Alice Wolf (Ellie Roswell, guitar and vocals, Joff Oddie guitar, Joel Amey drums, Theo Ellis bass) who hit the headlines when NME credited their debut album My Love is Cool 'the debut of the decade' follows the band on a UK tour taking in 16 different gigs opening in Belfast and finishing in London. It's not a narrative driven, get to know the band movie. With the music centre piece, Michael Winterbottom joined the band on the road, recording live shows, life back stage, the relentless, exhausting, life on the road, a tour diary with a twist. A slowly developing love affair between Glaswegian roadie Joe (James McArdle) and record label representative Ellie (Leah Harvey) who's pretty handy with a guitar herself, which doesn't go unnoticed by the band. They chat, laugh, grow close, have sex. Joe's brother pops up and he meets his mother (Shirley Henderson) in a Glasgow pub. The tour ends, Joe and Estelle say their goodbyes and an American tour's planned for Wolf Alice.
An innovative, mesmerising glance at the band that doesn't take long to hook you.
“The starting point for the film was a long time ago in a bar in New York when we met up with a band called Ash. They told us all about their life on the road – an endless string of festivals and gigs. It sounded romantic and terrible at the same time. I was curious to try and make a film about that sort of life.” Michael Winterbottom.
