AD 79 in the days leading up to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. Milo (Kit Harrington), who as a boy saw his family slaughtered by the Romans and was sold as a slave becomes a gladiator and falls in love with the aristocratic Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of Severus (Jared Harris) a wealthy merchant who's unwillingly betrothed her to baddy Corvus (Keifer Sutherland), a corrupt senator who it turns out led the Romans who killed Milo's family. Meanwhile Milo becomes best pals with Atticus (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), the reigning gladiator whom he's meant to fight. Swords at the ready.
The love story's set up, now for the disaster movie. Bang, bang, Vesuvius erupts and fire balls reign down with molten larva all over the place and throw in a tsunami . Pompeii's not a nice place to be.
The love story seems like a set piece intro to an AD 79 volcanic version of the Titanic disaster, the script's leaden and then the screen's filled with fire and catastrophic mayhem. It doesn't work.
And it cost an estimated 100 million dollars !!
