Jim Stark (James Dean) is a vulnerable, brash and troubled teenage rebel and a family move to LA isn't going to cure that. Carol (Ann Doran) his over possessive mother and Frank Stern (Jim Backus) his weak and ineffectual father fuel that rebellious streak and trouble with the law seems inevitable. Put the beautiful Judy (Natalie Wood) into the equation, conflict with her boyfriend, Buzz (Corey Allen) and a determination to prove his prowess by taking part in switchblade fights and the 'chickie' game where cars race to the edge of a seaside cliff and you've got a classic Jimmy Dean movie. It's all told from the conservative parents perspective with the hope that Jim and Judy will drift into conformity.
Look out for Hollywood 'enfant terrible' Dennis Hopper of 'Easy Rider' and Apocalypse' fame as Goon and SalMineo as John 'Plate' Crawthorn the lonely rich boy with a passion for Jim Stern who upstages James Dean.
