With echoes of Memento, Atom Egoyan’s latest drama offers a provocative study of the nature of evil as well as serving as a stark reminder of the atrocities of 20th-century history. Christopher Plummer gives a stunning performance as Zev, an elderly German Jew who has made a pact with his best friend Max (Martin Landau) to hunt down and kill Otto Walisch, the Nazi commandant who ordered the deaths of both their families. Following his wife’s death, Zev sets out to pursue four men who fit Walisch’s description – each of them immigrants who came to the US shortly after the war. Already succumbing to Alzheimer’s as he takes to the road, Zev’s thirst for justice overrides his fear of danger. The result is a road movie with an edge, as Zev struggles to cope with the realities of the present while facing down the ghosts of his past. Damon Wise 2015 BFI LFF
