The big time's eluded New York sculptor Harold Meyerowitz (Dustin Hoffman), he hasn't been the best of fathers and his children haven't lived up to his expectations. Cash strapped Danny's (Adam Sandler) divorced and tickles the ivories and composes the odd song on the family piano but he hasn't worked in a while. His daughter Elizabeth (Grace Van Patten) is studying film and he dotes on her. Sister Jean (Elizabeth Marvel) works for Xerox and is a background seeker. Danny's half brother Matthew's (Ben Stiller) has made the big time as far as being cash savvy running a wealth management firm in LA. And then there's bohemian Maureen (Emma Thompson), Harold's fourth wife who loves the booze and wants to sell their New York house. The dysfunctional relationship with Harold's on-going, his retrospective hangs in the balance and then a blow to the head puts him in hospital. And all they want is Harold's approval.
Comedy and tragedy merge. Regrets, hangups and life's disappointments surface in Noah Naumbach's witty, enjoyable, New York delight. A great script, stellar cast, a bull's eye hit.
