Taiwan-based writer-director Midi Z's fourth feature, 'The Road to Mandalay' continues with his preoccupation with exiles from Myanmar’s ethnic Chinese minority, with a love story of two illegal immigrants who resort to human traffickers to help them cross the Mekong river over the border into Thailand. As they reach Bangkok, Lianqing (Kai Ko) finds herself getting closer to fellow illegal immigrant Guo (Ke-Xi Wu) as she struggles in low paid jobs. Corruption is rife and the difficulties in getting in getting identity papers makes life even more difficult. Lianging realises that her dream of a better life, an escape from poverty and conflict is but a dream.
Meditative in it's approach and beautifully shot, 'The Road To Mandalay' requires patience as it quietly leads to a devastating finale.
