'A heart rending journey of self-discovery, Reese Witherspoon is outstanding.'
Based on Cheryl Strayed's best-selling 2012 memoir 'Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found', Cheryl (Reese Witherspoon), attempts the gruelling 1,100-mile hike across the Pacific Crest Trail in the early 1990s.
With a difficult break-up with her ex-husband Paul (Thomas Sadoski) and the death of her mother Bobbi (Laura Dern), the only way back for Cheryl (Reese Witherspoon)l is to undertake a trek. Guts, determination, desperation and more than a little bit of madness don't prepare Cheryl for the 1,100 mile route through through desert, snow, and over the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges. She can hardly lift her aptly named 'Monster' back pack and her walking boots are too small and skin her toes. It is an emotional journey of self-discovery interspersed with flashbacks to the past, as Cheryl comes to terms with the loss of her mother Bobbi to lung cancer which began her downward spiral into casual sex, heroin addiction and the end of her marriage.
Reese Witherspoon's outstanding with a full-on 115 minute screen performance, Nick Hornby's script which could so easily have slipped into sentimentality is spot on, Yves Belanger's cinematography captures the stunning beauty of the vast American landscape and the sound tracks hit the button. If only we could have had a bit more of the wonderful Laura Dern who played Bobbi.
A heart rending journey of self-discovery with a gut wrenching and outstanding performance from Reese Witherspoon.
